A few weeks later, after a particularly long day of training Vanessa was exhausted. Once she had eaten, she went up to her room. She took an aspirin and laid down in bed with a book. She was reading a novel about a strange man wandering into a western town and sweeping some girl off her feet.
She had been reading for about 2 hours when she heard a few thuds and a voice yelling.
Is that Paul? She put down her book and got out of bed. She ran down the hall, while still trying to be quiet, to where she thought she heard the noises.
Paul groaned from down the stairs.
Vanessa quickly ran down the stairs to see Paul on the floor, groping the wall as he tried to stand.
“Paul?” Vanessa asked, fear rising in her voice, “Are you okay?” She asked as she knelt down, narrowly avoiding being knocked over by his flailing.
“Vanessa?” He stopped trying to get up. “I’m fine, I’m fine.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yeah… Help me up.” He extended his hand. Vanessa obliged and started to help him up, as he got up, he promptly fell to the floor again, “Agh!” He clutched his leg.
“Paul! Hold on, let me get the lights.” She sprinted over to the switch and back. “Here let me take a look.”
Paul groaned as he extended his leg and she rolled up his jeans. “How bad is it, doc?” He laughed between grunts of pain.
“I don’t see anything, but let’s get you to an actual doctor.” She replied.
“Nah, it’s fine just help me get to my room.” He reached out his hand again.
“Paul!” She crossed her arms, “You’re obviously hurt, I’m getting you to a doctor, or a doctor to you.”
“Fine, but he’ll just tell you there’s nothing wrong.” Paul felt his way back to lean against the wall.
“Just hold on a second,” She sat on the ground next to him. She reached into her pocket for her phone, pressed a few buttons and put it up to her ear. “Jean? Yeah, Paul hurt his leg, can you get us to a doctor? Thanks.” She put the phone away. “Jean will be here any second.”
“I’m fine, you know.” Paul pulled in his uninjured leg.
“What were you even doing out and about this late?” She asked, turning towards him.
“I just wanted to take a walk.” Paul sighed, looking down.
“Don’t you think it’s dangerous?”
“What? Taking a walk? I’m not some toddler, I don’t need supervision.”
“Hey, I just think you need to acknowledge your limits. If you keep going like this you’re going to get hurt. We all need help sometimes. What if…” She paused, “You got one of those canes?”
“A cane? I’m not disabled, I don’t need a cane.”
“Paul, You can’t just keep pretending like nothing’s changed, and you don’t need any help.”
“I’m the one who needs help? I hear you wake up sobbing almost every night, you’re the one who needs help.”
Vanessa opened her mouth for a moment, and then closed it. She looked down and dabbed her eyes with her sleeve.
“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have-”
“No… you’re right. We’re both running from our issues.” She looked up at Paul, her eyes still watering a little. “So what about this, I go talk to someone about what happened, and you get some kind of thing to help you get around without falling down a flight of stairs. How’s that?”
Paul chuckled and put his hand to his face, “Yeah, I guess I could do that. You have to help me get it though.” He pointed at Vanessa.
“Alright” She placed her hand on his uninjured knee. She looked to Paul as he laughed, and smiled.
Jean came walking swiftly down the hallway towards Paul and Vanessa, “Good evening, how are you two?”
“Well I’m pretty alright. Just a bit of a tumble.” Paul answered.
“He can’t stand. I think there’s something up with his leg.” Vanessa said.
“Alright, let’s have a look then,” Jean squatted down next to Paul’s leg and examined it closely. After a few moments of squinting and poking Jean looked up, “Alright, I don’t see anything, but that doesn’t mean you’re fine. Where did it hurt when you stood?”
Paul gently ran his fingers across his lower leg and ankle. “Somewhere in here”
“Alright, I think we need to get this x-rayed.” Jean stood back up. “Probably quickest and easiest to carry you to the car.”
“Alright, yeah I suppose so…” Paul hesitated as he spoke. Getting carried was not high on his list of things to do, but it would definitely be faster, so he went along with it.
Jean crouched down and lifted Paul with incredible ease. He began moving down the hall before pausing. “Vanessa, will you get my keys, they’re in my left front pocket.”
Vanessa obliged and the they took off at a swift walking pace down the hall.
“Vanessa, unlock the car and get the passenger door.”
Vanessa obliged and Jean sat Paul in the seat, Paul situated himself and buckled his seatbelt, while Vanessa got into the back and Jean got in the driver’s seat. Jean backed the car from the garage and took off down the road.
