Trials: Recap

Two mojitos later, and with another in hand, Vanessa found herself back on the couch in what had evidently become Caveat’s ‘therapy room’. Previously she might’ve been more worried about a hangover or something, but at this point it didn’t really matter. Everything she’d had before was over, so what was the big deal if she slept until 2 PM and felt like shit.

“Ya know, Caveat.” Vanessa giggled a little at her own joke as she tried to get it out. “I think you might be my favorite therapist, because normally, I don’t get to drink until after the session.”

“Not like I have a license anyways, so there are no rules here!” Caveat laughed, being careful not to spill his own drink.

“Maybe this won’t be all that bad, just me and you…” Vanessa laid back on the couch and sighed.

“Maybe…” Caveat laughed, then shook his head. “Wait, wait, I think I was on to something before the mojitos…”

Vanessa struggled to remember for a moment. “Oh with the whole ‘tell the story up to here’ thing?”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah!” Caveat nodded, taking a sip of his drink, then setting it to the side. “I think we were really getting to something. Let’s keep going.”

“Ugh…” Vanessa groaned. “I don’t wanna think about any of that.”

“C’mon, we gotta finish what we started.” He thought for a moment. “Tell you what, I know a bit of the story, so I can fill stuff in. Bit of the added context.”

“Fine…” She sighed as she sat upright. “Let’s see, there was a year or so where we just kinda stayed in the house and avoided eachother… Deven moved in with us which was weird, but we got used to him. Then some more awful shit happened. I think it started with Paul leaving on his trip. He took Anastasia with him, and I think that’s the last time I hated her. We made up after, but I guess it doesn’t really matter what I think of her now…”

“Hey, no need to get stuck on one sad part.” Caveat gave her a pat on the shoulder. “What happened after that?”

“You don’t understand man… It was perfect and she was perfect and…”

“What’s done is done.” Caveat nodded sagely. “What’s not done is the story we’re telling.”

“Fine.” Vanessa cleared her throat and shook her head. “Well, then I decided I would go own my own trip, since Paul got to do one. Then I caused a whole scene and left in one of my dad’s cars. Then I woke up in the camp…” Vanessa shuddered at the thought of it. They needed to finish the story though, so she chugged the rest of her mimosa and sat the cup to the side.

“Alright, lightning round.” Vanessa took a deep breath. “Takeo, he was the dude who ran the prison and he had fire powers basically, monologued a bunch when I got there, then Darryl, who was just a guard but he’ll come up later, and some other dude threw me in a cell with Ashley. I was kind of a dick for a while, but I started to warm up to her. The camp really sucked, but we got by. Takeo did a bunch of weird culty bullshit about honor and stuff. I’m pretty sure he was completely white, so I don’t really get the whole Asian aesthetic he was doing, but whatever.

“Anyways, Takeo would do duels with the prisoners if we messed up. He murdered Johan, who I knew from my dad’s work, and then tried to make Ashley fight him. I stepped in and he kicked my ass. I think I was in the camp for like a month before that. He was really good at fighting despite being a weird creep.”

“Shit man…” Caveat nodded along.

“Hey aren’t you supposed to be writing this down or something?”

“Nah, don’t worry about it. I wasn’t writing anything important anyways.” Caveat shrugged, and took another sip. “So what happened next?”

Vanessa thought for a moment. “After that was the cave. Ashley and I woke up in a cave, and wandered around a bit. I think this was how Takeo punished people that he didn’t execute. We ran into Darryl, and I threatened him, but then I read his mind, and he was cool, so we worked together. I combined our powers, his was seeing a few seconds into the future, and scoped out the whole cave. Basically a bunch of the ways just led back to the camp, some would kill you, and one led to the woods outside. We took the one that led to the woods.”

“Hold that thought.” Caveat held up a finger and drank the last bit of his mimosa.

Another Caveat entered the room with two more mixed drinks in hand. These were definitely not mimosas. Vanessa took one, and it had a nice pineapple taste. Once he’d handed off both of the drinks, the other Caveat left. He seemed to be significantly more sober than the Caveat in front of her.

“Pina coladas.” Caveat nodded.

“So hold on, when you’re drinking, do all of you get drunk or just you?”

“Both.” Caveat nodded. “I’ve just got the one mind, so we’re all drunk, granted not as drunk as this one body, but the other bodies can move fine. If I got roofied or something, I could just cut off the body that got poisoned, and it would end. Anyways, get back to the story.”

Vanessa pulled herself out of her general amazement at the ridiculousness of the being before her. “Fine. We got out of the cave, made camp, and talked a bit. Then one of the guards, this one had super speed, came, and got in a fight with Darryl. They both got shot, so Ashley transferred Darryl’s wounds to the other guy, and then we decided to go back to the camp to free everyone.”

“Wow that was pretty fast.” Caveat nodded. “What was everyone else up to? I think they were there at the camp with you to do the whole big fight with Takeo.”

“Yeah, yeah.” Vanessa thought for a moment. She knew what Jude, Arte, and Anastasia were doing, but not really Paul. “So Jude got kicked out by my dad, and was on house arrest from the DSR. He met Arte while she was looking for Ashley, and she moved in. Then they did a bit of superhero stuff with Zoey, who lived nextdoor to the house with her dad. I think they did a fight with the imposter guy here.”

“Who’s ‘Imposter Guy’?” Caveat asked.

“Some kid. He got shapeshifting powers, and I think Felix made him do crimes while dressed like us.” Vanessa felt a twinge of anger at the mention of Felix’s name, but stifled it. This was a good time, so there was no need to ruin it. “Anyways, Paul was doing mystical shit at the monastery, which was some place in the middle east with a bunch of international magical monks. He didn’t really tell any of us. Anastasia was doing some investigating around the monastery. Evidently Jean knew the monastery chick?”

Caveat looked off to the side then nodded. “Okay, so evidently Paul was training his vision powers and found out about… Well, the incident.”

“Ah…” Vanessa nodded. That wasn’t really something she wanted to think about, so she took a large sip of her pina colada, and forcibly redirected her energy. “Anyways, we gotta keep moving. We’ve got a lot of story left to tell.”

“Please.” Caveat nodded.

“So we all met up at the camp, and then everyone insisted we leave Takeo alive, so we did. Jude got blasted by a full blow, but eventually we kicked Takeo’s ass, and hit him with a bunch of tranquilizers. I guess he got arrested or something.” She shrugged. “Nobody ever told me.”

Caveat looked off to the side again, and nodded. “Not arrested, went off with Darryl… No I won’t tell her that yet.”

“Who are you talking to? I feel like you’re talking to someone.” Vanessa looked off to where he was looking, but nobody was there.

“Don’t worry too much about it.” Caveat smiled. “Anyways, you ready to move on or do you need another break. We hit a nice stopping point.”

“Hmmm… Let’s just move on.” She’d like to wrap this up so she could get all the way hammered, rather than partially so.

Season 3: Afflictions

Note: Honestly I think Trials is a great read. However, I understand if you’re reluctant to reading a backlog, so this is more or less what you need to know for Afflictions.

Origins: Recap

Spoilers for Origins (AKA Earth 2: Season 1). If you’d rather read it, here is the first part.

Vanessa looked out the window, and watched the blue ocean waves lap at the beach. The sole occupant of the beach paced along with his head on a swivel. She wondered how much longer he was going to take. So much had happened, and at the end of it all, he was all she had. She laughed a little, but it was hollow.

She heard footsteps approaching and jumped a little bit. The man was still pacing the beach. She groaned and laid back in her chair.

A man entered the room. The same man that paced the beach at that very moment, in fact. He wore a Hawaiian shirt, a black backpack, and beige cargo shorts that seemed to complement his red skin very nicely. His sunglasses were perched just in front of the curved goat horns that emerged from the top of his head.

“Hiya!” He smiled, as he made his way to the chair in front of Vanessa.

“Do you know how long I was staring at you on the beach, thinking that was you?”

“Oh, he’s running security. We swap every day. I wear floral shirts, and he wears tikis.” He rifled through his book bag, and pulled out a small notebook and pen. “Now, I’ve been doing a lot of thinking, and I have something I’d like to try today.”

“Why do I have a feeling that you have a clone somewhere watching real therapy sessions around the clock?” Vanessa laughed.

Caveat looked briefly to the side. “Anyways, enough about me. Let’s talk about you.” He leaned forwards in his chair. “I want you to run me through everything that’s happened, from the beginning, like I know nothing about anything.”

“Alright…” Vanessa sighed and sat back in the couch. “I think my story really starts a little after the green light, since I didn’t know I had powers until Paul and Jude told me.

“I was living with my dad, and taking a ‘gap year’, which more or less meant sitting around doing nothing. I went out for a run, when some crazy guy pulled a gun on me, and dragged me into some warehouse.” Vanessa shuddered as she recalled the terror she felt, but pushed on. “He tied my arms around a beam or something. I wanted to do something, but I just… Couldn’t. My body wouldn’t do anything. Then Jude busted in and saved me. He rode in the ambulance with me, and kept me company in the hospital until my dad got there. He asked if he could call a friend to the hospital and have him meet me, which I thought was a little weird, but I said sure. That’s when I met Paul, and I really think that’s when I fell in love. He told me I had powers, and that they wanted to train me. My dad wasn’t for it, but I harassed him into it. I guess he was right in the end really.” She looked off at the ocean for a moment, before turning back. “Anyways, that was the day my story really began. One hell of a day.”

“That sounds like a lot.” Caveat nodded, as he penned some notes. “How long had Jude and Paul been doing the superhero thing at that point?”

“Ummm…” She thought for a moment. “I don’t know exactly, but I think they were still pretty new. They were on the news a little bit, so I knew who Jude was before he saved me.”

“Interesting…” Caveat wrote something down, then looked back up. “So, what happened next?”

“Let’s see… I trained for a little bit, got better acquainted with Paul and Jude. I figured out what my powers were, or at least the basics of them.” She nodded. “I did a little bit of super-heroing… Oh yeah! That’s when Paul broke his leg.” She laughed a little, but stopped herself. “He was so determined back then to not accept any limits. He tried to go downstairs at night, but fell and broke his leg. He was in a wheelchair for the next few months, if I recall correctly.”

“So you helped him through that?”

“Yeah…” She pushed back tears, and took a moment to collect herself. “That was the same day that we fought Jamal and Deven for the first time. Paul had a vision, so Jude and I went to stop a bank robbery.” She chuckled. “You know, I think that money was insured, and I don’t think they even would’ve hurt anyone if we hadn’t showed up, so I’m not sure what the point was…” She was quiet for a moment. “Anyways, we went in, and got into a standoff. I don’t even remember the exact order, but I think I tried something, or maybe it was Jude… Anyways, Jamal got me, and I woke up in the hospital. I had an electrical burn from my arm up to my face. My arm still doesn’t quite work the same.” She swung her arm a little bit to feel it. It was subtle, but something definitely changed. “The day wasn’t all bad, though, when I came to Paul and I talked and decided to start dating.”

“I see…” Caveat nodded, and flipped to a new page.

“Things were going well after that. I think that’s probably one of the happiest times of my life, until Anastasia showed up.” Her tone was a little more harsh than she had intended. “I don’t really hold it against her now, but I suppose it’s a little late for that. Anyways, Paul showed up with some stranger in a fast food uniform, and insisted she be able to join the team. As it turns out, she had ice powers. She blitzed through her training, and was a full fledged part of the team, much to my chagrin at the time. She was clearly infatuated with Paul, and I felt like she was trying to cut me off from him.”

“So you felt like she threatened your happiness and stability?”

“More or less. I think she really did, though it wasn’t her fault. She and Jude went out on a couple of Dayspring runs, until the day finally came. Jude was up in Gainesville for something, I think he was going to a school. I was getting my hair done, and Paul and Anastasia were at the house. I got a call from Anastasia, on Paul’s phone, saying he got kidnapped, and that there was a robbery. Jean drove me back, with half-way cut hair, and we regrouped. Jean did some detective work, while we waited for Jude, and figured out where they probably were. They had stashed the stuff they stole, and Paul, in the sewer. I was honestly terrified, after what happened last time. I hadn’t done any superhero stuff since then, and this was the guy that messed me up so badly last time. Jude and Anastasia went ahead, and I was planning on staying behind. Then my dad talked me into going. I wonder what his angle was there… He had been trying to be better back then, and we were pretty close, so I guess it could’ve been genuine.

“Either way, Jean and I went to the sewer, and he sent me in ahead. I found some dude unconscious, and gave him a kick to the head when he started moving… God, I hope I didn’t kill him too…” She looked back at the ocean, and pushed back tears again.

“I see… Why did you do that?” Caveat looked up from his notepad.

“I don’t know… I guess I didn’t want him coming in behind me, and figured they were all bad guys anyways.”

“I see… So what happened next?”

“I made my way into the room where they were already fighting. Jamal took a shot at me, I blocked it, and then I killed him…”

“Why did you go for a kill-shot there?”

“I… I think I just put all the blame for everything that seemed to be going wrong on him. I sensed my world was being threatened, I pinned it all on him, and then I killed him. Once he was gone, the world wasn’t better, it was worse if anything. Then I blamed Anastasia. I thought it was her that ruined everything. She was the reason why Paul wasn’t acting the same around me.” She nodded in silence for a moment. “I went to therapy after the Jamal thing… It didn’t really help, but I don’t think I was actually trying.”

“I see…” Caveat wrote something down for a second, then looked up. “Alright, do you need a break, or are you ready to keep going?”

“I think I need a break.” Vanessa sighed.

“Alright, I’m gonna make some mojitos, we’ll do more therapy when you’re ready.” Caveat jumped up, repacked his bag, and slung it over his shoulder. “You want one?”

“Why not.” Vanessa shrugged. This was a vacation home, so she may as well do a little vacationing.

Trials: Part One

Hey everyone, I thought for a while about how to make a good recap of season one, and finally settled on this. I hope you enjoy, and happy reading!

Earth 2: Parts 1-25 Recap

Hello, all! In an effort to lower the entry barrier for this series, I will be releasing periodic recaps. I’m still not decided on the frequency, but that will come later. What follows is the gist of the story that has already been uploaded, but doesn’t contain every detail. I still recommend reading for the full experience.

Paul and Jude were just hanging out, when a green light washed over them. Paul found that he couldn’t see, and went to the hospital. He was then informed that he is likely permanently blind. He moves in with Jude and adjusts to his new life. Some time passes, and Jude found that he had the ability to create light. Paul revealed that he had been having visions, and had a vision of a crime. They went out, and Jude put a stop to it.

Meanwhile, Jamal and Deven were at work when the light hit. Deven turned into metal, and Jamal found that he can control electricity. Jamal attacked his boss, and walked out with Deven behind him.

Paul continued to have visions of crimes, and Jude continued to stop them. One day, Paul had a particularly bad feeling about a crime. Jude, hard pressed for time, found he could fly, and took off for it. He busted in to stop it, but was knocked down. He got back up and quickly dispatched the criminal. He then took Vanessa to the hospital.

At the hospital, Jude spoke with Vanessa, and she agreed that she would like to train to be a hero. A few days later, Jude and Paul rolled up and began to train her. They found that she had psychic powers, and could create disks with her mind that she could use as weapons. Her father expressed reluctance, but Vanessa talked him into letting her be a hero.

Mr. Smith offered Jude and Paul full time employment to train his daughter and keep her safe. A few weeks later, Jude and Paul moved into the mansion. Vanessa helped Paul unpack, and they shared a moment together.

After some time training, Vanessa went out on her first mission as a superhero. She and Jude easily stopped the robbery, and she went back home to celebrate. She sat in bed aftwerwards, when she heard a disturbance. She investigated, and found that Paul had fallen down the stairs and couldn’t get up. She talked Paul into letting her and Jean take her to the hospital. Upon arriving at the hospital, Paul was told that his leg was broken. He was informed of his mobility options and sent home.

While talking to Jude about his leg, Paul had a vision of a bank robbery. Vanessa and Jude went out to stop it. They found Jamal and Deven holding up the bank with their powers. They almost beat them, but Jamal took a hostage. Vanessa tried to attack him while he was leaving, but she missed and he hit her with electricity.

Paul and Jude visited Vanessa, and found that she was in stable condition. She had some permanent scarring, but she would be fine. Paul takes this moment to tell Vanessa that he cares for her, and she told him that he reciprocated. Jude told Vanessa that he would understand if she didn’t want to continue being a hero.

Jude went to Mr. Smith and asked him to allow Vanessa to make her own decision. Mr. Smith and Jude got into an argument, and Jude flared up with his powers. After a moment, Jude walked out. Mr. Smith reflected on his mistakes in life for a while, until Jean talked him into going to pick up Vanessa. Vanessa happily embraced her father when she saw him. Vanessa and Paul went out on their first date, which was interrupted by Paul having a vision.
